ROOF LOAD: HOW IT WORKS

How much can your roof carry? Below you can read how dynamic and static roof load work, and what that means for our tents. Want to know right away for your car? Enter your registration number in the roof load check.

DO THE ROOF LOAD CHECK

The question we get most often: will this fit my car? The honest answer is that it depends on your car, not on our tent. So here, in plain language, is how roof load works, so you can check it yourself.

Two numbers, often confused

Dynamic roof load is what your roof may carry while driving. This is the figure from your vehicle documents or manual, and it's the one that matters for whether a rooftop tent works. For passenger cars it's often between 50 and 100 kg, but it really varies per model and trim.

Static roof load is what your roof can handle while parked. That's considerably more, since there are no forces from braking, steering and bumps. You sleep while parked, so this is the figure that applies. It's rarely in the documents. Ask your car manufacturer or importer.

How much does a tent like this weigh?

LCM Dune 60.5 kg · LCM Oasis 66 kg · LCM Savannah 74 kg. Your roof bars themselves add to that.

Example calculation: roof bars of 7 kg plus an LCM Oasis of 66 kg is 73 kg your roof needs to carry while driving.

What we don't do

We never say "fits any Land Cruiser" or anything like it. Two cars of the same model can have different roof loads, depending on roof trim and build year. We don't know your car. Your vehicle documents do.

How to check it

Use the roof load check on our site for an estimate per vehicle, and always verify it against your own vehicle documents or with the manufacturer. Indicative only. With a Dutch registration number you just fill in the plate; with a foreign one you pick make, model and year.

FITTING

THE TENT ON YOUR ROOF, DONE TOGETHER

Roof load is the arithmetic, fitting is the real work. The tent is mounted on your roof bars with four clamps. With two people you are done in about half an hour, and a clear manual is included.

Collect the tent in Hoogwoud and we do it together, at no cost. You also get stronger bolts than the ones supplied as standard, and we show you how to re-tighten after a few hundred kilometres.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

1. Roof bars first

Roof bars you sort out yourself, they differ per car. We recommend aluminium crossbars with a load capacity of at least 75 kg each.

2. Lift with two people

60.5 to 74 kilos is not something you lift onto your roof alone. Do it together, and put a blanket on the edge of your roof.

3. Four clamps tight

The tent sits on the bars with four clamps. Tighten evenly, not too hard.

4. Re-tighten after the first drive

Check the clamps after a few hundred kilometres and then briefly before every trip.
