Renting a rooftop tent: conditions, extras and frequently asked questions
Here is the fine print: every extra with its price, the specifications of the tent, how insurance and damage work, how to return the tent and all the conditions in one list. You book on the rental page.

Anything not everyone needs is listed separately. That way you only pay for what you actually take. You tick them when booking and settle them on collection.

Insurance: you arrange that yourself
The rooftop tent is not insured through us. During the rental period you are responsible for the tent, including damage, loss and theft that are not your fault. A tent on your roof simply stands outside, by the road and on the campsite.
So before you leave, have a look at your own policies. Sometimes rented camping equipment falls under your travel insurance, sometimes under your contents insurance, sometimes under your car insurance, and sometimes under none of the three. That differs per policy, so call your insurer and ask. A five minute phone call.
Damage beyond normal wear is settled against the € 500 deposit. If the damage exceeds the deposit, we invoice the difference. That is why we walk through the checklist together on collection and on return and take photos: then it is clear to both of us what was already there and what happened along the way.
How do you return the tent?
Just as you used it. The final cleaning is included in the rental, so you do not have to get on your knees with a brush. What we do ask: shake out the sand and get the mud off your shoes before climbing up. If the tent comes back with sand or mud on the inside, we charge € 65 extra cleaning.
More important than clean is dry. A damp tent that stays folded in the shell will go mouldy. Did it rain on your last day? Just say so when you return it and we will open it up to dry. That costs you nothing. Keep quiet about it and mould appears, and we settle that against the deposit.

Where are you allowed to sleep?
Not everywhere. Wild camping is not permitted in the Netherlands and in many other countries. Campsites, farm campsites and private spots are fine. This is how the rules work in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
Frequently asked questions
What does renting a rooftop tent cost?
A weekend of three nights costs € 210 and a week € 295 for the Bivak package. Two weeks costs € 475. If you want the complete kit with a made-up bed, table, chairs and kitchen, that is 5 stars: € 320, € 405 and € 585. The deposit is € 500 and you get it back within five working days after we have inspected the tent.
What is the difference between Bivak and 5 stars?
Bivak is the rooftop tent with mattress, ladder and storage bags, fitting to your car, levelling blocks and the final cleaning. You bring your own bedding and camping gear. With 5 stars a made-up bed is added, plus a table, two chairs, lanterns, a two-burner stove with gas canister, pans, crockery, cutlery and washing-up kit.
How far ahead do I need to book?
At least two days, because we check your registration first and confirm your dates within one working day. In high season, earlier is wise: we have two Dunes.
Is the rooftop tent insured during the rental?
Not through us. During the rental period you are responsible for the tent, including damage, loss or theft that is not your fault. Check your travel, contents or car insurance beforehand for cover of rented camping equipment; that differs per policy. Damage beyond normal wear is settled against the deposit.
Can I rent a cool box or power?
On request. Tick it when booking or write it under your own wishes, and we will see what we can arrange and quote a price.
Can I carry gear on top of the tent?
Yes, with the cargo bar: € 25 per rental period. On it you can carry sand tracks, a spare wheel, solar panels or rod tubes. The bar weighs 7 kg and your load also counts towards your roof load, so we check first whether your car has the headroom.
Is cleaning included in the price?
Yes. The final cleaning and drying are included in the rental price for both packages. Only if the tent comes back with sand or mud on the inside do we charge € 65 extra.
Where can I rent a rooftop tent in North Holland?
At LCM Offroad in Hoogwoud, Gouwe 15, in West Friesland. Collection and return by appointment. From Alkmaar, Hoorn, Heerhugowaard or Purmerend you are there within half an hour.
How much deposit do I pay and when do I get it back?
€ 500, payable on collection. You get the deposit back within five working days after returning the tent, provided it is complete and undamaged. If you rent a bed rack as well, € 250 deposit is added.
Which rooftop tent can I rent?
The LCM Offroad Dune, our 2-person hardshell of 60.5 kg. The Savannah is available on request, the Oasis we do not rent out.
Are roof bars included in the rental?
No, you rent those separately for € 35 per rental period, fitting included. If your car has closed rails, a bare roof or fixed points, we order a made-to-measure kit and it costs € 65. Using your own bars is fine too.
Do I have to put the rooftop tent on my car myself?
No. We fit it on collection and take it off again on return. That is included in the rental.
Can I cancel free of charge?
Up to 30 days before the collection date you can cancel free of charge. Between 29 and 15 days we charge half the rental sum, within 14 days the full rental sum.
Does the rent come off the purchase price if I buy a tent afterwards?
Yes. If you buy your own rooftop tent from us after renting, the full rent you paid comes off the purchase price. Not part of it, all of it.
Will the rental tent fit my car?
That depends on your car's roof load, and that differs per make, model, trim and year. Do the roof load check for a first indication and compare it against your owner's manual. If you cannot work it out, give us a call.
